Nonsense-syllable Sound Discrimination Ability Correlates with Second Language (L2) Proficiency

چکیده
Sound discrimination helps babies acquire the vocabulary, morphology and syntax of their first language. Researchers have also shown a relationship between sound discrimination ability and second language (L2) experience. In this research, we investigated the correlation between the sound discrimination ability of lowintermediate level, adult Japanese learners of English and various measures of their L2 proficiency, including the TOEIC (IP) test, grammar and vocabulary tests, and a motivation measure. Firstly, our results showed a strong correlation between nonsense-syllable consonant sound discrimination ability and the listening comprehension results of the TOEIC test. Secondly, a moderate correlation was found between overall sound discrimination and such L2 proficiency measures as vocabulary, grammar, and reading ability. Finally, we found that vowels were more difficult to discriminate than consonants; in particular, the vowel in a VC syllable was the most difficult to discriminate, whereas the consonant in a CV syllable was the easiest to discriminate. We interpret our results to mean that, for lowintermediate level L2 learners, a simple 10-minute sound discrimination test can serve as a reasonably reliable tool for placement of students into different class levels, especially listening and reading classes.

The relationship between task repetition and language proficiency
Task repetition is now considered as an important task-based implementation variable which can affect complexity, accuracy, and fluency of L2 speech. However, in order to move towards theorizing the role of task repetition in second language acquisition, it is necessary that individual variables be taken into account. The present study aimed to investigate the way task r...
متن کاملInvestigating Holistic Measures of Speech Prosody through Ratings of Filtered Speech
Prosody has been demonstrated to be a key component in second language acquisition and assessment. This study analyzes raters’ ability to distinguish different levels of L1 and L2 prosody when listening to filtered speech. The goal of this study is to investigate how many levels of prosodic proficiency can be made when it is isolated in a filtered speech condition. An experiment was conducted w...
متن کاملOptimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*
This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...
متن کاملLevel of Grammatical Proficiency and Acquisition of Functional Projections: The case of Iranian learners of English language
Unlike Lexical Projections, Functional Projections (Extended Projections) are more of an ‘abstract’ in nature. Therefore, Functional Projections seem to be acquired later than Lexical Projections by the L2 learners. The present study investigates Iranian L2 learners’ acquisition of English Extended Projections taking into account their level of grammatical proficiency. Specifically, the aim is ...
متن کاملIndividual differences in second-language proficiency: does musical ability matter?
This study examined the relation between musical ability and second-language (L2) proficiency in adult learners. L2 ability was assessed in four domains: receptive phonology, productive phonology, syntax, and lexical knowledge. Also assessed were various other factors that might explain individual differences in L2 ability, including age of L2 immersion, patterns of language use and exposure, a...
